We might have been busy blasting aliens in Doom or crafting pixel art masterpieces in Deluxe Paint, but all the while, the VGA chip was subtly laying the groundwork for our future understanding of everything from memory management to interrupt handling.

The VGA chip, with its relatively straightforward architecture and well-defined programming interface, provided a unique learning environment that’s difficult to replicate with modern, highly abstracted systems.   • Attribute Controller: This allowed for more flexible color mapping, particularly in the 16-color modes. It essentially acted as a look-up table, allowing different pixels to point to different colors in the palette.
  • Sequencer: This component controlled the flow of data to and from the video memory, ensuring that the CPU and the CRT controller could access the memory without conflicting with each other.

What made the VGA so conducive to learning was its relatively low level of abstraction. While it offered higher-level functions, you could still get down to the bare metal and manipulate individual pixels, registers, and memory locations. This direct access was crucial for understanding how the system worked at a fundamental level.
